The 2022 vintage was a very unique vintage throughout California. In a separate, accompanying article, I discuss the rather extreme steps I took to guarantee the quality of this vintage. The Garys’ Vineyard was picked on September 14, 2022. As has been the case in previous vintages, I picked two disparate sections of the vineyard together and ferment them together in one tank—something of a purposeful field blend. As the vintage had me taking unprecedented chances, I decided to go all in and used a large percentage of whole clusters in the blend and also bled off about 20% of the juice to concentrate the wine. Unusually, itwas necessary for me to make some additions to the wine this vintage including some nutrients and a small amount of tartaric acid. Ultimately, only five barrels were selected in a blind tasting for the final wine, making this the smallest Clarice Garys’ Vineyard production to date.
