THE TALE OF TWO WINES AND HOW OUR MOMS HELPED US COME UP WITH THEM!
When I first started Siduri Wines in 1994, my Mom (Vera) would visit from Texas and help with harvest. She was already in her 70s, which somewhat limited what she could do – but she was out every year, helping with sorting fruit or, as you can see from the picture above, making certain I had the forklift lined up correctly and dumped the bin of recently fermented wine into the hopper rather than on the concrete.
Now 30 years later, Morét’s Mom (Rhonda) comes during harvest to help her pull leaves ahead of the picking crew in the vineyard and to make sure that only the best fruit goes into the tank (you can see her sorting above). It turns out that Morét’s Mom is also very good at blending wine. When deciding on Morét’s 2022 wines, Morét, Rhonda, and I each came up with our own blend for the Lakeview Vineyard Pinot Noir and we tasted the results blind, It turned out that the wine that “won” and that we selected to be bottled was Rhonda’s blend!
With Mother’s Day just around the corner, Morét and I have pulled together a special pack of wines in honor of our Moms.
The 2019 Clarice “Vera Mae” Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir was a one-time wine I made for my Mom. It’s a blend of Garys’ and Rosella’s Vineyard from a remarkable vintage. Without any new oak on the wine, it was designed to show off the natural fruit from these two great vineayrds. I made the wine so Mom would have something special to give to her friends in her nursing home. Unfortunately, she passed away before I was able to bottle the wine, but her name and her spirit continue on in the wine.
The 2022 Morét-Brealynn Lakeview Vineyard Pinot Noir comes from Morét’s premier vineyard and is the wine that Rhonda created. Rhonda was part of this wine from the very beginning, heading out to the vines with Morét for harvest, sorting the fruit at the winery, coming up with the final blend, and even watching over the final bottling of the wine.
These two wines have received outstanding press with the Clarice Vera Mae Pinot Noir having received 94 Points from Wine Enthusiast while the Lakeview Pinot Noir was awarded 96 Points from Good Vitis and described as “one of the best American Pinots I’ve ever had….”
