Over the last few years, my partnership with Philippe Cambie in Beau Marchais Winery, has taken me to Chateauneuf-du-Pape several times. I’ve fallen in love with the region and its people and have come to understand why Philippe took such pride in calling himself “a child of the South of France.” Now, I hope you all can join me on my next trip to the Rhône this coming June.
Arrive in Avignon (our home base for the trip) on your own. Check into the luxurious Hotel Le Prieuré (https://www.leprieure.com/en). Guest meeting the early evening followed by an Optional Dinner (additional charge) at the Michelin One-Star Rated The Restaurant Le Prieuré.
In the morning we are picked up in our tour bus and led on an in-depth tour of the vineyards and wineries of Chateauneuf-du-Pape by wine expert, Kelly McAuliffe. This day will focus on the various soils of Chateauneuf, including the remarkable galets roulés (pictured above), and how these soils express themselves in the wines. We will visit and taste at three wineries (for example: Domaine La Barroche, Clos du Mont-Olivet, Domaine de la Janasse). There will be a Lunch with the group, including wine (of course), at La Table de Sorgues (https://latabledesorgues.fr/fr/). That evening, after returning to Le Prieuré to freshen up, we will all hit the town to experience a true French dinner and share multiple bottles of wine in Avignon.
Today we will explore the remarkable region of Gigondas. Kelly will lead us on our tour bus to this exciting region, producing some of the finest wines of the Southern Rhône. We will taste at three different wineries (examples are: Chateau Saint Cosme, Domaine des Bosquets, and Domaine La Bouissiere). We will enjoy lunch at Le Bistrot de l’Oustalet (https://www.loustalet-gigondas.com/le-bistrot). Dinner and wine that evening will be in Avignon.
This is an early morning as we visit the Northern Rhône regions of Cote-Rotie and Saint-Joseph. Our bus takes us two hours north as we once again visit three wineries and learn about these regions through their wines (examples include Pierre Gonon and Yves Cuilleron). Kelly has selected a fantastic spot for lunch for us, combined with wines from the region. Dinner that evening will be on the way home so come prepared for a long and exciting day of wine and food (and more wine).
We will get a little bit later start this morning (we will need the rest). Once picked up by our bus, we will spend a day in honor and remembrance of Philippe Cambie. We will taste some of Philippe’s last wines at wineries such as Chateau de Vaudieu, Chateau de Nalys, and Clos Saint-Jean). Lunch will be at the vigneron-owned, Table de Vigneron. And we will splurge a bit on our final night dinner in Avignon.
