The 2022 vintage was a very unique vintage throughout California. In a separate, accompanying article, I discuss the rather extreme steps I took to guarantee the quality of this vintage. The 2022 Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir is the product of superb grape growing, conscientious wine makering, and uncompromising blending. In producing this wine, we spent a great deal of time tasting through all of the various barrels from the Garys’ and Rosella’s Vineyards. Some vintages, coming up with a blend that works perfectly is quite easy, but in 2022 it often seemed that something would stand out. Ultimately, we started working to incorporate some new oak into the blend—adifferent tact than we had used in previous vintages with the SLH wine. Before you know it, we were finding blends that worked. Ultimately, we came up with a wine that incorporated 2/3 new oak and was just over 60% Rosella’s vineyard fruit. Hard work and perseverance paid off!
